Hunting Dogs Information
Per The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, a hunting dog is "the dog that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water."A Hunting Dog should exhibit a fine nose, staunch pointing and the desire to search for, track and retrieve game in a cooperative manner. A Hunting Dog needs to further prove his independence, stamina and quality of nose by transferring his search for, and retrieving of game, to the water. True Hunting Dogs should perform all tasks with enthusiasm and be willing to work with, and for, their handlers. The Hunting Dog breeds, as we know them today, are products of Europe. No distinctive hunting breed has been developed in North America.
A few of the many popular breeds of hunting dogs include: Airdale Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Weimeraner, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Norwegian Elkhound, Deutsch Drahthaar, Vizslas, and many Spanials just to name a few breeds of Hunting Dogs.
If you are a duck hunter, the labrador retreiver is the hunters choice of dog. The Labrodor Retreiver has a webbed foot which makes them excellent swimmers. A thick dense coat keeps the dog warm even when they are wet and a large mouth makes carrying downed ducks back to the blind easy. These dogs are instinctive retrievers and while it takes intense practice to groom the perfect lab duck hunting or water fowl dog, the labroador retriever will reward your efforts.
